NEW YORK, N.Y. – Three University of Maryland seniors, goalie Niko Amato, midfielder Mike Chanenchuk and defender Michael Ehrhardt, are among the 52 men’s lacrosse student-athletes named to the 2014 Tewaaraton Award watch list, which was announced Thursday night by the Tewaaraton Foundation.

Amato is on the watch list for the second straight season, while Chanenchuk and Ehrhardt make the list for the first time.

Amato, who has started all 53 games in his Maryland career, ranks third all-time in career saves as a Terrapin with 499. This season he ranks fourth in the country with a 5.25 goals-against average and eighth in the nation with a .650 save percentage. Amato was a third team USILA All-American following the 2013 season and was named a second team preseason All-American heading into 2014.

Chanenchuk is one of the nation’s most prolific midfielders and has led Maryland’s high-powered offense through the first three games of 2014. For his career, Chanenchuk has amassed 109 points on 76 goals and 33 assists. Last season, he became the first Maryland midfielder to lead the team in goals scored since 2000.

Ehrhardt has been the anchor of Maryland’s defense for the past three seasons. A preseason first team All-American at close defense, Ehrhardt has made a seamless transition to long pole this season and leads the team with six caused turnovers. Overall, Maryland’s defense is second in the nation, allowing just 4.67 goals per game so far this season.

The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and top female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of top collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.

Players not named to the initial list have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Additions will be announced on March 20 and April 10. On April 24, the field will be narrowed to 25 men’s and 25 women’s nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions for players who earn a spot. Five men’s and five women’s finalists will be announced on May 8 and will be invited to the May 29 ceremony in Washington.
